Style Crush: Lily-Rose Depp

With favourable genes and Hollywood connections aplenty, it’s no surprise that the beautiful daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp is pursuing a career in the spotlight herself.

With favourable genes and Hollywood connections aplenty, it’s no surprise that the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp is pursuing a career in the spotlight herself. She may be just 19 years of age, but French-American starlet Lily-Rose has already graced several covers of Vogue and worked on multiple campaigns with infamous fashion house, Chanel. Aside from her burgeoning career as a model, Miss Depp is also an aspiring actress and has starred with the likes of Natalie Portman and a myriad of big French stars.

One thing that isn’t immediately obvious about LRD is her smaller stature. According to the internet, the young fashionista is just 5ft 3 – so not your typical catwalk model, though her lithe limbs would indicate she’s a very proportionate petite. After studying her style over the past few years, it’s clear she’s a big fan of V and halter neck shapes- something that works really well for petites by elongating the neck/chest area (as previously documented here).

Another trick I’ve noticed Lily applying to her chic ensembles is the 3/4 length sleeve. This is an easy way to add the illusion of longer arms, as demonstrated below. This floral Chanel jacket also features padded shoulders- a trademark tool in power dressing.

For more casual day to day outfits, Lily-Rose uses other simple fixes like tucking her top into her jeans to define her waist and elongate her legs. She generally wears shorter tees, following the one third to two thirds rule.

And in the colder months? Lily tends to opt for cropped but oversized jackets and slim casual bottoms (as per below). Again, the style of jacket adds volume to the shoulders which projects a sense of power. The shorter length means that it falls at the right point on the waist so as not to shorten the leg.

Note the shoes in the photo below too- the colour matches the trousers and socks, creating more flow and stopping the ankle from being cut off.  The “flatform” style is also great for adding a bit of height without the discomfort.

Lily’s style appears super effortless but is all what it seems when you pick her looks apart? Perhaps a little more thought goes into her clothing choices than first meets the eye OR maybe she’s just a natural when it comes to flattering her frame- what do you think?

Style Crush: Stacey Dooley

When she isn’t reporting from perilous war zones, fighting for women’s rights or exposing exploitation, investigative journalist Stacey Dooley can often be found gracing the fashion pages of our favourite women’s weeklies. The Luton native clearly has an eye for style, always nailing the casual chic look- just take a look at her Insta grid.

First of all, can we just take a second to appreciate those glorious ginger locks?! The shade compliments her high waisted olive green skirt a treat. Also a big fan of the footwear, it brings a relaxed feel to the whole look and the ankle cleavage adds the illusion of extra height.

This boss lady is absolutely killing it here with her pointed mules and 3/4 length denim cut offs. She gets a bonus point for the v-neck shape of the blouse which tricks the eye, elongating that torso no end.

When it comes to a loose-fitting ensemble, Stacey knows how to work it. She’s no stranger to an unstructured linen co-ord and these cream wide leg trousers are just dreamy. Many petites avoid wearing anything unfitted as they presume they’ll drown in material but, take note: the three quarter length sleeves on Stacey’s top half prevent the outfit from dwarfing her frame- genius!

It’s not all about neutrals and androgyny though; Miss Dooley has been seen sporting prints before too, and unsurprisingly still looks fab. Here, the drawn in waist helps balance her proportions, defining her silhouette perfectly.

Ultimate goals. Again, when it comes to petite dressing, she’s got it sussed. The high waisted pants and v neck crop lengthen her body from top and bottom.

And did I mention the gold hoops yet? Another Stacey staple that oozes cool.

Another iconic look. I love her fearless approach when it comes to trying a new trend. She’s clearly not afraid to take risks, and they always seem to pay off.

Thanks for being such an inspiration Stacey. A role model to all young women and proof that you don’t have to tone down your style in order to be taken seriously as an intelligent woman.

Style Crush: Zoe Kravitz

Born to rock star Lenny Kravitz back in 1988, it’s fair to say that American singer, actress and model Zoe is now a fully fledged celebrity in her own right. In addition to her myriad of talents, it can’t be disputed that she has a very distinguished sense of style and is a master of power dressing- which is useful when you’re 5 ft 2.

Zoe is one of those people who you’d never guess was vertically challenged at first glance. This is predominantly because she has a big presence and dresses to reflect this.

Let’s take a little look at some of her most envy inducing outfits…

All hail Queen Zoe. This chic loosely tailored look with nude body underneath oozes confidence and the deep V neck broadens her upper half perfectly. Subtle yet striking.

Don’t be afraid to try out the oversized look when it comes to coats and jackets. The Olsens do it all the time and, as Zoe proves here, it adds an element of fierceness to an outfit no matter how small your frame. That being said, if you go TOO big you’re at risk of looking like you’re drowning in material so be careful.

Side note: A streamlined maxi coat in one block colour is the best way to do it if you want to take the plunge.

Even at a feminist march, this babe manages to look the part wearing a slinky pair of elasticated trousers with a cropped knit and slouchy cardi. The high waistline in this navy ensemble is the key component when it comes to adding height.

Adore this red carpet riot (it even has pockets 😱)

The bardot neckline and short hemline are ideal for a shorter lady who wants to make a statement. Note that Zoe has also pulled her hair back from her face; this additional skin exposure is another good way to trick the eye.

This look was too cute not to feature. Zoe is partial to an oversized garment or two and, again, the short hem on this makes her legs appear endless. You’d never know she was petite.

This bold 80s look for British Vogue screams powerful. The shoulder pads, statement hoops, loud print and short hemline can’t be ignored. Once again proving that even short girls can project a supermodel aesthetic.

Zoe’s versatile style allows her to work both edgy and elegant looks, switching between the two at the drop of a hat. This Versace piece is so simple but manages to flatter Zoe in every area. The plunging neck and high waist combo falls in all the right places which enhances her incredible figure.

Top tip: A side slit, like the one above, is another technique petites can use to create the illusion of longer legs.

Style Crush: Ella Purnell

To be labelled a style icon at just twenty years old is a pretty impressive feat, and it appears to be just one of many accolades this young actress boasts. First stepping into the spotlight back in 2010 appearing in her film debut, Never Let Me Go, alongside Keira Knightly, Ella’s career has gone from strength to strength. She’s now all over the red carpet, frequently gracing the pages of popular celebrity magazines and, more often than not, featuring in the best dressed section. Not only is she a total babe, she’s also only 5ft 2 inches tall-  making her fabulous fashion inspo for us ladies of a smaller stature.

A regular on the FROW at fashion week these days, Ella usually likes to make a statement with her outfits. Here, at Burberry’s LFW SS17 show, EP got it just right pairing a chic black blouse and boots with a beautiful floral midi skirt.

At the Gucci Cruise 2017 show, Ella went for a bolder look with this colourful Kitsch style dress and playful platforms. I’m sure you’ll agree she looks incredible and her lilac lids top it off perfectly.

More recently, at the Cartier Queen’s Cup Polo Tournament Final this June, Ella sported an elegant white co-ord set. She’s used texture rather than colour to make a statement here and though strikingly simple in contrast to some of her more daring options in the past, the ensemble looks amazing on this style queen.

It’s rare to get a glimpse of Miss Purnell’s edgier side but in a recent interview with Paper Magazine she took part in a shoot where she was styled in far more casual attire than usual. She can clearly pull off just about any look and I’m personally loving the pink earring/gold jumper dress combination.

She may be many things but predictable certainly isn’t one of them. Despite being relatively new on the scene, I have a feeling this definitely won’t be the last we see of this girl.
